LEGAL QUARREL

COLONIAL-BORN PEER

LONDON, 6th November. In the West London Court, Lady Langford was granted a maintenance summons against Lord Langford, the Tamaki-born peer, now of Melbourne. Lady Langford first made the application for tho summons in Maiylebone Court. Mr. M. Turner-Samuels, who appeared for Lady Langford, alleged that Langford deserted his wife a number of years ago. They were married in 1922. Langford got into serious debt and went abroad in .1923. His wife discovered he had gone to Canada. He sent a letter to her in 1924, but made no attempt to maintain her. It was impossible to trace him until 1931, when he succeeded to his uncle 's title. Counsel, outlining the husbands divorce proceedings against his wifo in Australia on the- grounds of three years' desertion, said: "Apparently that is sufficient causo in Australia for divorce. The husband was bigamously married in Victoria. When it was discovered, he started desertion proceedings as a sort of cover. I have an affidavit in which Langford says he communicated with his wifo. Actually he has not supported her, nor attempted to find a homo or do anything for her. Ho must have means to keep up the life he is living." Tho Magistrate said the case was not within his jurisdiction. It must be heard in West London. Later, an application m the West London Police Court resulted in the granting of a maintenance summons to be heard on 17th November.
