STUDY IN HANDICAPS
NOT A LONE DISCOVERY
In the racing sphere coincidences would appear to be common occurrences, but it is unusual for such to happen before the races on which they have their fouuelation. Nearly twenty-four hours after the handicapping of Joie de Val at Levin and Feilding respectively had been made the subject of a note in these columns, a letter arrived from an Otaki sportsman pointing out the dissimilarity of the imposts imposed at the two meetings. The letter, whose writer asks to ue referred to as "A Subscriber," and which is dated 17th November, is as follows:— I would like to draw your attention to the handicaps for the Lake Hack at Levin and the Ivowhai Hack at Feilding. As both these events are for hacks and run over the same distance, the following assessments give much food for thought. The respective weights, as comparable, are: — LEVIN. FEILDING. Lake Hack. Kovvhal Hack. st lb st lb Grand Jury 0 0 S 13 .Tnle de Val S 5 7 12 (lay Court 8 0 7 11 Fairway 7 10 7 3 Saltpot 7 S < 9 Here is truly a remarkable difference of opinion between two handicappers. How the owners of the other four must envy the owner of Joie de Val! [Note.—l am taking it for granted that the handicaps were framed by two different men. I am not sure of this point.] The handicappers, as pointed out yesterday, are different men. Mr. H. Coyle IS the Levin handicapper, and Mr. J. E. Henrys made the Feilding assessment. Joie de Val's recent record is rather impressive. She won at Masterton in a canter, was nithor unluckily beaten a length by Emotion at her only start at Trentham, then at her next appearance scored a runaway victory at Carterton. These are her three most recent performances,
