Assistance to Fanners by Coalition Government. Substantial relief will be granted to rural ratepayers as a result of the Government's decision, to make grants to county councils out of the Main Highways revenue fund as a subsidy on rates. i . . The subsidy to bo made, will be at the rate of ;2s 6d in the .£', on. the. average annual amount of rates. collected by the local bodies during ■ the three, years .ended 31st March, 1930, and means a total sura.involved of £250,000. The grant will be applied in making refunds' to ratepayers at the rate of 12J per cent, of the amount payable in respect of rates levied for the financial year ended 31st March, 1932. Grants also apply to road board districts entirely within the boundaries of a county. This is a step towards the lifting of the burden from our producers that the Coalition Government intends as part of its policy towards restoring financial stability and'confidence. (L.4.)
