Broderiek, G. Kent, B. Lander, and J. Baldwin. • ; - ' Tho positions of the above players do not necessarily signify that they are the 'club's Strongest players, as the club is liieky this season in" having many teen newcomers, and wheii challenges for tho top places are played .some- very;....interesting;.,..competitions should result. • Miss E. Laycock plays a gooddefensile.gari}ej_.and,.has shown a decided on last season's form. ■ ...Miss T. His. service is'excellent.,..and he. has many good strokes.. '-' .. ■ . This season- the ladder, is ..running very smoothy, and a keener. interest than last season has been, shown. ■ The handicap tournament is at present in progress, and judging from, the number of entries received, all members ■ are very keen. . Some .very interesting games have so: far been, played off, and the selection-'coflimittee'is to be congratulated for its handicapping. It is pleasing to. note' that m.anjr of the old; members are. doing much to eradicate their-faults, in last season's play,, and also -thaV the •.better players are interesting themselves.more in:the younger'members' -progress.- ■ ■■■' '■ Thorridoit Cluti ...- "'*.-.•.■ '•-' • ■■■■■.. As the season at Thoindon'only commenced on the 31st October, players have not yet had much opportunity of getting, into f o.rnu. .The courts, are playing well, however, and/.players-are. now taking; every: opportunity oi- the fine weather to get as.-much.play as possible. ■ The men's senior- team- will -probably comprise N. The club has entered a-senior"' B men's team, and "shall .be . able to field a strong four." Two young players who will probably be given an opportunity- to prove, their mettle- are N." Davys and G-. ' .The handicap tournament of' the ■Talavcra Club.. has just been -coin.m'enced, and although, not many matches have- been - finished there aw a good nuuniber-which are arranged for this week.- Tho following .is a brief criticism, of sdnie.'of tho players:-^ Miss M.' Gold ' has been one of the top lady players for some years,, as her extreme 'Steadiness; usually '•' triumphs over opponents, more-brilliant but less .effective. ■'■.. '■'-:■■' ~ ■ ■ - Tulloek ig a. new niember ' who is working; hard .for. lost form,, due to an idle 'season or two.' His -overhead work .'is very good even- now; and combined with a.fast American- twist service and a_ good-length :drive,: is going to' make him one of the hardest "players to beat. Miss B. Downing is a new member who is showing'great promise. .She has a . very free.. styl.e, which is pretty to watch,- and'heV forehand and backhand .shots-are reliable and effective. ,- : E.. Bray,-.captain of the :club, is an extremely hard nut to ci-acl^ as he uses his head,'and.if he 'runs'--info trouble can usually change his game.: to such an extent that his opponent'finds the tables re-versed. ■' ;;. '• '-< '■'-:-.- ■ ' ' Miss E. Cl.ei'e has improved. very much sincc'last season, and is showing more; keenness all round.' She possesses a forehand drive with- a great- punch and a. backhand-which she can place. V. Stace, although Btill quite young, is showing signs of promising te.nnis in 'tE'b "near" future. "Hels sound in most departments of the game, but is a little too fond of trying to drive every ball instead of-.picking out-the-right-ones to hit. : ' Miss G. Eetemeyer came to the club la'sf'season from Palmerston North, and was-of - great ■ assistance ■ last year to the fourth grade team. She has"a very dangerous backhand, and by dint of hard practice is developing a like forehand drive. Her service, although strong, "appears to take a little top niu'ch'out"of 'her. G. M'Callum is a very improved player. He specialises in the cut-stroke and lob," and consequently is usually too good for any but.a very active opponent. His service is erratic. Miss E. Olliver is perhaps the. most improved jnemfeer of the club. She started playing last season, and although she still has a very long way to go yet,'by hard work has earned'for herself a place, amongst the .first -ten on the club's ladder. ' ■ " • The club at present is a little disorganised .owing to -so many .members haying examinations to prepare for, but these will terminate shortly. On Saturday next the team commences its programme at Miramar against South Wellington Tennis Club, and the prospects of a successful season are rosier.-this year last year, when it finished third in the section of third grade, and fourth in the section of the fourth grade championships. This year only one team has been entered, as it is intended to indulge in a programme of friendly matches with.pth.er affiliated clubs. -~»'' Te Rama Club.
