TRADE BALANCE
WELL ON RIGHT SIDE
Customs returns of overseas for the month of October last show an excess of imports over exports of £126,781, or £1,120,000 less than the balance as on 31st October, 1930. The returns for the month only compare as follows: — Oct.. 1931. Oct.. 1930. ■• . £ £ Imports J ,862.231 3,691,55n Exports .. 1,735,450 2,415,565 Excess imports £126,781 £1,240,018 In comparing monthly returns shipping movements must be taken into account, for the loading and discharge of cargoes by one or two large ocean-going ships make all the difference in the returns of imports and exports. The returns for the ten months ended 31st October, however, afford a better guide to the conditions of external trade. These returns are furnished by the Customs as under: — 10 months, 10 mouths, 1930. 1931. £ £ Exports 39,576,645 29.004,574 Imports 37,040,126 20,960,260 Excess of exports .... 2,536,519 8,044,314 Exports for the period show a decline of £10,572,071; but the imports are also less, and that by £16,079,866.
