GRANADO GOES NICELY
Most of the Trentham horses with engagements at Levin on Saturday were galloped this morning. The plough was again exclusively used, and was faster than on Tuesday. Several of the trials were very attractive from a time point. White Squall (W. E. Shand), Foghorn (E. G. Bush), and Capetown (G. F. Dick) finished in the order named but without much between them at the end of five furlongs in lmin 2 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. All three have lately been working well. Bed Sun (E. J. Mackie) registe»<?d one of his best gallops yet in beating his stablemate, Moab Queen (W. S. Jones), by four lengths over half a mile in 49 l-ssec. While an outside prospect in the Weraroa Hack Handicap at Levin, he will be up against solid opposition for a maiden. Weatherstep (Bush), who does not come in till Feilding, bettered this time for half a mile in slipping over the distance alone in 48 4-ssec, a pleasing effort. Hymgreat (J. F. Nicholson) worked twice round, sprinting from the three furlongs each time; His first time was 38sec. P., Burgess again rides him in the hurdles at Levin. Spear Lad (H. Johnstone) was again sent a mile, accompanied by Movietone (L. Daly) till beyond tho half-mile, then picked up by Capo Royal- (I. Eohloff). He was going well in front of the last-named at the finish, recording lmin 44 2-ssee for the mile, after doing the first half-mile in 50 4-ssec and "the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec. W. J. M'Dowell rides him in the Levin Handicap, also Movietone in the Makomako Handicap. Courageous (Dick), who has recently improved a lot in appearance, again beat Kilstar (Mackie) by nearly a. length over seven furlongs in lmin 32 l-ssee, the last half-mile in 53 4-ssec. Tobaccoland (S.Wilson) just shaded Joie de Val (Shand) at the end of seven furlongs in-lmin, 30 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 S-osee. Granado continues to gallop attractively, and this morning, with J. D. Martin in the saddle, he beat Eminent (W. H. Jones) by half a length over five furlongs in lmin 1 4-osee, the last half-mile in 48 4-ssec. This was the best effort of the morning. Acis (Maekie) slipped over the same distance alone in lmin 2 4-osee, the last -half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Cottesmore (A. Jenkins), going easily in the straight, beat Matin Chimes (Johnstone) by half a. length, with Araios (Daly) some way behind, at the close of six furlongs in lmin 18 4-ssec, the last half-mile taking 53 3-ssec. He could have improved the figures had he been require.d. Matin Chimes appoared to make a good effort to reach him in the straight, but she got so near him only because the pa»e was not hard on. Zephyrus (Mackio) just headed Lyrical (W. H. Jones), with Shootist (Wilson) well beaten, at the end of six furlongs in lmin 16 3-ssee, the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Lyrical was finishing on strong]}'., The Sun (Jenkins) was sent over two hurdles and gave quite a satisfactory display of fencing.
