MARRIED TEACHERS

BOARD DISAPPOINTED NO AMENDMENT TO ACT ; The appointment of married women teachers was again before the Wellington Education Board yesterday, and-several speakers urged that the board should once more seek legislation giving it poiver to make appointments of a temporary nature when married women were appointed whose, husbands were unemployed. Messrs. T. Forsyth, J. J. Clark, and C. H. Nicholls were appointed as a deputation to' wait upon the Minister of Education ou the subject. .Mr. Nicholls said an assurance had Wen given that the matter would be attended to, but nothing-had been done. He considered that it was unfair to give permanent appointments to women whose husbands might be out of work Sfof a few weeks only. While he did iiot favour dismissing married women, he thought the conditions should be tightened, up to prevent permanent appointments.being made in such cases as he had-mentioned. " Mr. Clark expressed disappointment that the Act. had not been amended as tromised.by the-Miuister. - The chairman (Mr. T. Forsyth) quoted from a Christchurch newspaper editorial which voiced the opinion that the first teachers to be dismissed should be tho inefficient ones. Mr. P. Robertson agreed that'the inefficient teachers should be dismissed as soon as possible, but thought the prime consideration was to have discretionary power in the appointment of married women.
