MISHAP TO PAKURA
NO FURTHER INQUIRY
No Magisterial inquiry is to be hel< into the mishap to the coastal steameq Pakura, which became stranded oit sj reck at Tora Landing, in tho vicinity; of Cape Palliser, on 7th November, according to an announcement made bj> tho .Marine Department to-day. Tha" Pakura was 'refloated and towed to' Wellington by the Harbour Board's tug Toia, and is now undergoing re« pairs.
It is understood' that the evidence" tendered at the preliminary inquiry; conducted by the Marine Department^ * showed that there was no suggestion' of negligence on the part of anyona concerned, and as no lives were at any; time endangered, it was decided that a further investigation was, uimecesn sary. It is recognised that ships work* ing at places such as Tora Landing are running a risk, and in the case or the Pakura the general opinion is that the rock on which she struck must hava been missed very narrowly on • many; previous occasions by the Pakura and by other ships.
