PROFESSOR HEWINS DEAD

LONDON, 17th November. The death is announced of Professor W. A. Hewins; Director of the London School of Economics, and a leading exponent of the doctrine of protection. Professor Hewins's death on the day Britain was committed to duties was a strange coincidence. He was ono of the greatest experts on tariffs in the country and devotod a lifetime to the cause.
Professor William. Albert Samuel Hewins, M.A., was 66 years of age and was educated at Wolverhanipton* School and at Pembroke College, Oxford. From 1895 to 1903, he was Director of the London School of Economics and from 1902 to 1903 was teacher of Modern Economic History in the University of London. FToin 1897 to 1903 he 'was Tooke, Professor of Economic Science and Statistics at King's College, London. For four years ho was also a momber of tho Senate of . the London University. He . contestedi several seats as a Conservative and' finally was elected for Hereford, which he represented in the House of Commons from 1912 to' 1918. From 1917 to 1919/ he was Undcr-Secretary of State for the Colonies, and from 1903 to 1917 was Secretary of the Tariff Commission. His publications have been numerous, and include articles in tho Dictionary of National Biography, Palgravc's Dictionary of Political Economy, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Ho took a leading part in the advocacy of fiscal reform in Britain for a generation.
