WELLINGTON NORTH
MR. TROUP'S ADDRESS
Mr. G-. A. Troup, official Coalition candidate, was given a cordial _ reception, and had an attentive hearing, at a meeting held last night in.the Methodist Schoolroom, Molesworth street. Mr. N. H. G. 'Macfarlane presided. There was an attendance of about 130 per-
sons. Mr. Troup devoted a considerable part of his-address to a criticism of the policy of the Labour Party. He emphasised the vital importance of putting the finances of the Dominion on a sound basis, and-spoke in terms of appreciation of the attitude taken up by the Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, in respect to balancing tho Budgot. The unfavourable trade balances in recent years were commented upon, and the speaker pointed out the necessity especially in such times as the present, o.f the country living within its income. During the past few years, and particularly during-the session just ended, the Labour Party had strongly opposed proposals to reduce expenditure. The pointed out the unwisdom of adding to the public debt and increas : ing the public interest bill at such a time. as this. The country must, he urged, bring its expenditure within its income. The country would, of course, pull through tho crisis. When a spirit of confidence replaced a spirit of fear, such as liad now como over the community, Now Zealand would reassert itself and go forward even more quickly than she had recently gono down.
There were, said Mr. Troup, two policies before the people. On the one hand, there was tho sane method of putting New Zealand, on her feet; and, on the other, there were the social myths out of which it would be most difficult, almost impossible, to extricate ourselves.
In reply to a question the candidate said ho was not in favour of a State bank. A voto of confidence in Mr. Troup was passed by acclamation.
