RAILWAY MAN RETIRES

'. A wireless set was presented to Mr. T. A. O'Connor, of the .Chief Accountant's Office of the New Zealand Railways, at a large gathering of the staff, on the occasion of his retirement after 35 years' service. The Chief Accountant (Mr. H. Valentine), who.presided, referred to the, long and distinguished service rendered by Mr. O 'Connor, dating back to the days when,the office was in the Government Buildings. It was unfortunate that the Department was obliged to dispense with some of its senior officers. ■ He wished Mr. and Mrs. O'Connor good-luck. Messrs. W. Bishop and B. P. Gillies, Assistant Chief Accountants, Mr. W. H. Welsh, representing the Treasury, Mr. N. P. G. Ewart, representing the Chief Mechanical Engineer; Mr. W. T. Doig, representing the. Signal and Electrical Engineer,. Messrs. J. W. ■ Dayman, A. A. B. Boult, P. J. Wright, and J. H. Monteith, divisional officers, and Messrs. C. Batten and ¥. K. Porteous, representing the superannuated officers, also made eulogistic reference to the outstanding qualities of the. departing officer. ■ ' • . : Mr. O 'Connor, who was received with applause, thanked all his old friends and members of the staff for their good wishes. He also" expressed the hope that, when the Department came into its own again, all would share in the return to prosperity. '■ ■ Cheers for Mr. O'Connor and his family concluded the proceedings.
