MELBOURNE BAD LUCK
Only the fact that he wrenched his near foreleg a furlong from tho post in the Melbourne Cup prevented Concentrate from achieving.. Australia's supreme racing honour, is the opinion expressed by the gelding's trainer, H. B. Lorigan, who returned from Melbourne, via Sydney, by the Maunganui this morning. Lorigan added that Concentrate finished on three legs, so that his effort in holdiug out for third money was a remarkably courageous performance. Concentrate was on board the Muunganui, and so were tho other three members of Lorigan's Australian team, Oratorian, Gesture, and Lavington. Concentrate walked all right when landed, and is by no means a bad case. The other horses looked well after their trip.
Concentiatc did not actually biea.k down in tho Melbourne Cup, but he gave himself a \ery severe wiench. He is now to bo blistered and tuined out for a long spell. Loiigan behoves he will then come back sound ±or another lacr picpaiation.
No plans have been made yet ,foi the other three horses, but it is unlikely that Gebtuio will ever race again. Once or twice she raised hopes that she was lecovciing borne of her brilliance, but the hopes were not realised.
Concentiatc and Oratonan each won a lace on the tup. With the smallest turn of iortnne Conccntiato might in addition have been successful in the A.J C. Metropolitan, in which he was a head away second after apparently not having been ridden -with the best judgment, and also in. ths Melbourne Cup. IjdMiigton. did not Avin a lace, but lan consistently well, and was sevcial times placed. *
