MALICIOUS WOMAN
A DAY OF HOAXES
AMERICAN VISITORS

CnRISTCHURCH, This Day,
Victims of a series of malicious hoaxes, two' distinguished - American visitors to Christchurch, Dr.. L. D. Coffman, president of the University of Minnesota, and Mrs.'Coffman, had an unenviable day " yesterday. All tho arrangements for their entertainment wero cancelled by bogus telephone calls, and in addition Mrs. .Coffman was sent hurrying to the Lewisham Hospital, where, she had been informed, her husband was seriously •ill. This was another hoax. Tho perpetrator was- au ■ unknown woman who seemed to have knowledge of the visitors 1 movements.- • As soon as Mrs. Cpffman left the. hotel for the hospital an urgent call came for Dr. Coffman, who was at the time playing golf. He was informed of the call and at once .came to town, fearing Jhat it might mean bad news from America. The position became so bad and the calls so frequent that Dr. and Mrs. Coffman appealed to'the superintendent of the telephone exchange and a special staff was stationed at the switchboard to trace any. calls. The visitors left for the- North lasb night after their troublesome day. They do not know who is the perpetrator of the- hoaxes. -
