There Was—it was' his own record of failure."—This was the summary of Mr. J. Thorn, Labour candidate for Otaki, speaking at Porirua last night, of the results of the 1925 and 1928 elections. "A vote for Coates, "lie added, "is a yotc for ruin of the country— chaos and reduced wages."
A Coalition slogan of Safety v. Socialism was referred td by Mr. B. Semplo at Miramar last night. "Safetysafety," lrt said. "What is safe?' The only things that appear safe to-day arc tho banks and the monopolies." Ho declared that if Sir Joseph- Ward had been alivei the .United Governmentwould not have broken its election pledges; but before- his body was cold in the grave his successors had violated ,almost every pledgo that they had been elected on. Labour's plan to settle the immediate -problems of mortgagors and mortgagees was ..outlined by Mr. J, Thorn, Labour candidato for Otaki, at Porirua last evening. ' 'Wei propose that in the case of mortgages andlcasos, the parties shall have'throe months to reach a voluntary agreement," ho, said. "If at tho end ;of that time there is no agreement, there shall., be an arbitrary reduction of 20. per: cent, in rent and interest straight away." • . '
