WELLINGTON NORTH
SIR JOHN LUKE'S
CANDIDATURE
■ Acting under medical : advice, Sir John Luke, who has announced his intention to contest the Wellington North seat as an Independent, will be unable to take the platform to address the electors. In an appeal to the electors, however, he oxpresses the hope that the small minority recorded against, him in 1928 will be turned into a substantial majority this year. Numerous support-, ers of himself in the electorate were desirous that he should again offer his services to the people. Sir John Luke's record of public work includes thirteen years as a member of Parliament, eight years as Mayor of Wellington/and thirteen years as a city councillor. He has also- been chairman of several educational and industrial bodies, and was a member of the National Industrial Conference. Sir John believes he possesses a range of experience which should be helpful in Parliament during the difficult period of financial and economic adjustment. The principal need of New Zealand to-day, he 'states, is a strong co-operation of men whose practical experience will ensure tho formation of a new national policy to safeguard New Zealand against the periodic slumps inseparable from a one-sided development of the country's resources. Sir John urges the development of manufacturing industries suitable to New Zealand, as ho believes that concentration on farming enterprise alone will not cure unemployment. Ho is opposed to taxation schemes which penalise thrift and check production. Sir John holds the view that the cost of Government in New Zealand is too high', and ho thinks that savings could be effected by grouping small bodies into larger and more efficient authorities. The main mandate of'the people to Parliament should be for sound finnaco.
