SANDERS CUP
BETTY WINS AGAIN
Three boats contested the fifth trial last evening to pick the yacht that is to xc- - present Wellington iv the forthcoming races for the Sanders Cup. The Betty, which has won all the trials so far with' the exception of the first, was again" to - the fore, but the race was keenly contested all the way. The Lavina started out. very well, the coarse being from Point. Jerninghain to a buoy in Shelly Bay, then . to a red buoy off the Miranur Wharf, and back to Point Jerningham, but after she rounded the buoy at Miramar she fell away. There was a fresh northerly blowing, and the sea was choppy, so at times the yachts made a fine picture, with spray flying over their bows. There were four men to every boat. There were many peo« pie on shore watching-the race, and tha" occupants of a number of cars followed' the race by driving along the road round, Evans Bay. The Betty and the Lavina got awarf practically together at 6.25 p.m.^with tha Miss Josephine (Queen March), a littlej behind. The Lavina, down to leeward> began to pull out from the other* almost; straightaway, and set a lively -course for the buoy. The Betty, after running witli the Miss Josephine, began to leave -Tier behind. The order, rounding .the buoy mi Shelly Bay, was as follows: Lavina, 6hr 32min ssec; Betty, 6hrs 33min lOsec; Miss Josephine, 6hr 33min 30sec. Ac tha yachts moved away from the buoy the Lavina continued to go well, increasing her lead. The Batty, however, forged ahead of the Miss Josephine. At one time there was about 300 yards between the Lavina and the Betty, and a fair ■ distance" between the Betty and the Miss Josephine. Rounding the red buoy off the Miramar Wharf the order was: Lavina, 6hr 44mi» 55see; Betty, 6hr 48mm Ifaec; Miss Josephine, 6hr 46min. 60sec. ' 1. " BETTY AHEAD. Once round the buoy off Miramar, the' Lavina made in the direction of tha Patent Slip, and commenced to change her leading jib to her working jib. The 'Betty had, meantime, been carrying' her working jib, and the Miss Josephine kept to her leading jib throughout' the race. This lost the Lavina a valuable lead. The Betty and the Mips Josephine, on rounding the buoy, moved off in the direction of Shelly Bay, and the Lavina for a whila continued her progress along the ■ 6hora near the Patent Slip. On reaching the bay .before Shelly Bay, the Betty changed her tack, and the Lavina, which had moved over to windward, changed about at the same time, so the two yachts commenced their, beat towards Point Jerningham with the Betty to windward, and with a slight lead. The Miss Josephine, was so far behind that she could be dis-_ missed as a winner. The Betty, by reason of her position to windward, kept her lead until the end. The finishing order and times were:— Betty (A. Johnston), 7hr 16min 50sec. J. Lavina (N. Blair). 7hr 18min 25sec .. 2, Miss Josephine (D. M'Kenzie), 71ir 23min : ■- S
