NAVY LEAGUE ON RUAHINE
Members of the Navy League were entertained yesterday afternoon on board the liner Euahine when they wore tho guests of Mr. J. H. C. Bond, Dominion superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, owners of the vessel. The function took .place in conjuneti6n with the presentation of a plate from the Navy League to tho 'shipping company's liner Northumberland, in commemoration of the services given by the ship's company at tha Hawkes Bay earthquake. Arriving on board the Buahine the guests were met by Captain G. Kinnell, master of the jyessel/ M-r. J. J. Dougall,-Dominion prcakteiMsstff the Navy League,, Mr, W. JPfSyj^president of the Wellington branch of the league, Mrs. Perry, and Miss A. Perry, and Mr.'E. Darroch, Dominion secretary of the league. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was served in the dining saloon. Among those present were the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and Mrs. Hislop, Mr. J. H. C. Bond (Dominion superintendent, New Zealand Shipping Company), Mr. C M. JUNIORS ENTERTAIN
To an attendance of over SO members and friends the junior members of tho Lyceum1 Club presented a very interesting and enjoyable evening under the heading of an "Oriental Evening." The decorations were most effective, tho' lights being shaded with Chinese lanterns and Japanese sunshades. Brass vases filled • with cherry blossoms, decorated the stage, while full uso was made of tall brass candle sticks with candles burning. The Oriental atmosphere was enhanced by the burning incense and tho very charming Eastern gownß worn. A very fine programme had been arranged,- .the items being giveD in costume. The performers were as follows: Miss Vera Boesley, pianoforte solo, "Hush Time in Hong Kong"; Miss Phyllis Martin, solo, "Tho Hindu Song"; Miss C. Keddell, "An Old Chinese Legend"; Mr. Vernon Oswin, elocutionary, "Allah"; Miss Ailsa Dillon, song, "One Fine Day," from I "Madam Butterfly"; Miss E. HogarthGHI,'"A Tale of Old Japan," elocutloiiary; Miss Myrtle Chote, song,' " 'Till I Awake"; Miss Mavis Dillon, .accompanist. A particularly amußing'l I item was the competition, "A Cherry Bace," the prize-winners being Miss Pulley and Mr, Green. The prize for the most - original dress was presented' Ito Miss J. Drawbridge.
A feature of the evening was the novel supper, consisting of savoury items beloved of the Orientals, ceriaiiily " ifo'lT "usually presented, and creating much interest and amusement tdall'preseht.' A few dances for*the younger folk drew a highly successful evening to a dose. -
