DAMAGES FOR SLANDER

CLERK OF WORKS AND ENGINEER (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 11th November. A verdict for the plaintiff, who was awarded £.300 damages, was given by the jury yesterday in a case in which Forbes Eadie, of Mt. Albert, claimed £500 from Wilfred E. Begbio, engineer of the Mt. Albert Borough Council, for damages for slander. Plaintiff alleged that the defendant declared that when Eadio was clerk of works in charge of a council contract, he had sold a quantity of soil to a ratepayer, for which he had received a cheque and the money had not been paid to the council. It was further alleged that Begbic said that the plaintiff had stolen a shrub from a property in Asquith a-venue.
