FREEZING WORKS
FEAR OF MONOPOLY
MEAT BOARD'S POLICY
Home concern at tho fact that freezing works throughout the country wore being acquired by large proprietary firms, thereby creating a monopoly, was expressed by a Wairarapa remit which came before tho Dominion executive of the .New Zealand Farmers' Union on Thursday.
On behalf of tho Wairarapa, Mr. W. Morrison said he understood there was a feeling that eventually tho weaker works would bo absorbed by Ilic large concerns, which would then bo in ;i position to dictate to farmers in the matter of charges. Personally, lie was not very much afraid or trouble because of the wide powers of the Meat Board.
A Gisborno member said that since Vestry's came to Gisbornc farmers had had had nothing to complain of iv tho treatment receiver], and overhead charges had been reduced. It was decided to ask lh« Meat Board to state its policy in the matter.
The Meat Board is also to be urged not to make a levy this year in view of the strong position of the reserves. The meeting supported the Electoral Committee- of the Meat Board in disapproving of a private member of Parliament introducing a material amendment to the Meat Export Control Bill without first consulting the organisations representing tho sheepowners, and expressing confidence in the present constitution of the board. It was agreed that the amendment Bill and the method of election proposed by it were against the best interests of the producers.
