YACHT WRECKED

CREW OF THREE SAFE

A NARROW ESCAPE

The auxiliary yacht Maputu, manned by Mr. J. W. Stallard and his two sons, Basil and. Martin, has been wrecked in Palliser Bay, but her crew are safe. The Maputu, it is stated, left Foxton on Tuesday, and arrived off Mr. Eiddiford's station at Orongorongo on Thursday to take in a supply of benzine, and left again at 3 p.m. As nothing was heard of the launch, anxiety was felt for its safety, and on inquiries being made last evening it was learnt that it had been wrecked in Palliser Bay. The Maputu was driven towards the shore by the wind, and on striking thr rocks turned turtle, sinking stern first. The three men launched a dinghy, but even then had a desperate fight to reach land, and had to drag themselves through the heavy surf by boat-hooks. They were exhausted when they reached the shore, but managed to walk to Mr. Eiddiford's station, whero they were hospitably! received and spent the night. This morning they all left for Wellington, and reported that the Maputu was a total loss.
