Wild enthusiasm marked Their Majesi ties' visit to the play "Cavalcade.'* Crowds waiting iv the Mall in bitter cold cheered and passers-by in th» Strand rushed on to the roadway cheer, ing and waving. Special police were called iv to rw strain excited throngs who were break* ing down the cordons outside th« theatre. Their Majesties obviously wero touched by the warmth, of the reception. Tho scenes inside the theatre h'tivd not been paralleled for many years. Th« entire house rose and cheered madlyj when Their Majesties, accompanied by} the Prince of Wales, the Duke anl Duchess of York, and Prince George* entered the box. ' The King, wearing a white gardenia* repeatedly bowed and the Queen, waved her white-gloved hand. After tho National Anthem there was a! moment's silence as the orchestra struck up "The Soldiers of the Queen." Thai cheering was then renewed and. the) house joined in the chorus. When the play ended with an inn pressionistic scene depicting the hecti<| clays of 1931, blending into tho toastj "May this country of ours that we love* so truly find dignity, and peace again,'* every face in tho vast audience turned to the Royal box. There was a moment of tense silence before the lights went up,' then thai players stood on- the stage before a' huge Union Jack, singing, the National Anthem. The audience did not join in that chorus. It seemed overawed withi emotion. Many eyes glistened with) tears. Their Majesties were actually leaving the box before a great cheer came. Th« Queen turned bowing and smiling, an<l beckoned the King to her side. Theyi stood together acknowledging thai ovation. Outside the theatre the enthuaiasmi was unabated, and thousands Bhoute^ as the Boyal ears disappeared.
