SEAMEN'S MASS MEETING
PLAN TO CALL OUT CREWS
SYDNEY; 29th October. At another pass meeting of the Sydney Soamon 'a Union to-day, a motion sponsored by the militant faction calling on all members employed on interstate ships to cease work after 24 hours* notice, which i« being given immediately, was carried. The decision involves every interstate vossel, and is believed to include the XJlimaroa, Niagara, and Aorangi; also ships controlled by the Burns, Philp Company.
The moderate section fought the motion, but were greatly outnumbered. .- The meeting Was not nearly^ so disorderly as: those previously because of an understanding among.the leaders of the various factions to restrain their followers from heckling and interrupt.ing.;, V.. •■' /■: ■•'■ '■■■ i- •■■>.-. '.'■■■.'■■■.- . ■ Shipowners received no response this afternoon when they called for crews for the Westralia, the Ormiston, the Macumba, and the Wear; l '. A report has been received from Adelaide that the local seamen will ignore the Sydney decision fpr a general \ strike, and accordingly will man all ships ; excepting the Canberra.:: Fourteen vessels already are laid up in various ports. ■ . ■■■:-..-. The shipowners are considering the position at Melbourne to-day. ? A vital decision is expected shortly.
