RELIEF WORKS
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The duty devolves upon me to cor-, rect a statement that may create a wrong' impression regarding relief work' if not refuted. In to-night's issue under "Points from Letters" a correspondent very aptly compares some figures in connection with relief wages. He, however, gets very wide of the mark when he asks whether the Minister approves of maintenance, work being done at relief wages, and instances the Johnsonville "septic tank." I want to give the statement a most emphatic denial, it being quite incorrect. The Minister would not approve. He has a most capable and exacting deputy in JohnGonville, and that officer should not have any reflection cast upon him. While being most sympathetic with the unemployed be scrutinises most closely the nature o£ all works undertaken by relief workers and administers the regulations with the strictest fidelity.—l am, etc., A.
