FIREWORKS WON TWICE
In perusiug the list of Victoria Derby winners one is struck by observing that it has been won twice by the same horse, Fireworks. All sportsmen know that a Derby is a race for three-year-olds, consequently in the ordinary course no horse could win the same Derby twice.. The explanation lies in the fact th.'.t tho two Derbies were run in the same season, and the reason is given in the following paragraph. In November, 1567, the ordinary Victoria Derby iyas contested by five horses; and the race.was won by Mr. J. Tait's Fireworks, jockey C. Stanley. On New Year's Day, 1868, just two months later, another Victoria Derby was staged in honour of the Duke of Edinburgh's visit, and, drawing the same five runners, it was again won by. Fireworks, tho same jockey, in the saddle, but in three seconds faster • time.' The nest Derby was then run on New Year's, Day twelve months later, but the November date; was reverted to the following season. -
