LIFE SAVING
THE YEAR REVIEWED
The annual report of the Wellington Head Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society, to be presented at the annual general meeting next Thursday, states that the weather conditions during the season materially affected the result of the year's operations as far as ocean beaches were concerned. Despite the inclement conditions experienced during most of the year the total number of awards issued showed an increase from 400 to 533.' This year's figures include 39 breast-stroke certificates issued to primary schools. Up to this year the figures of the Palmerston North Sub-Centre were included in the returns for the Head Centre, but on this occasion the figures relate to the' Wellington Head Centre alone. The Palmerston North district has become a distinct head centre.
An effort was made by the executive committee to create interest among the schools in the breast-stroke certificate, and though the figures show an increase from 3 to 39 as compared with last year, the committee feels that a still further eifort will have to be made during the coming season.
During the year intensified activity was shown in the sub-ceatres, particularly in Nelson, Masterton, Blenheim, and the Hutt Valley. The committee reports the formation of a new life-saving club at Nelson. A life-saving club had been reformed at Otaki, and had been affiliated with the head centre.
The financial position, it was stated, is fair, but the decreased grant from the M'Carthy Trust from. £25 to £10 would. materially affect next year's operations.
