LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

Tho Legislativo Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day.

The Land Transfer (Hawkes* Bay) Bill and tho Hawkes Bay Earthquake Relief Funds Bill wero received from the House of Representatives, read a second time pro forma, and roferred to tho Statutes Revision Committee.,

The Chairman (the Hon. 'J. A. Hanan) of the Statutes Revision, Committoe reported that tho- Committeo had carefully considered the Directors'.Protection Bill and taken evidence thereon, and in view of the lato stage of the session tho Committee recommended that consideration of the Bill be deferred and that it bo not proceeded with this session. , The Native.Land Bill was received from :the' House, and referred to the Native Affairs Committee. .;' : The Leader of the Council (the Hon. •Sir: James Parr) moved the second reading of "the Stamp Duties Amendment Bill, and explained its provisions. The Hon. J. A. Hanan said it appeared to- him to be unreasonable to impose-the tax on people who. wore paying a brief visit to Australia. They should fix a period during which a per-son-could be absent from the Dominion.1 , ;• ■ . Tho inclusion of a hardship clause was suggested by the Hon. W. Buddo.
