BRITAIN'S TRADE
OPTIMISTIC NOTE
An optimistic ,vote. regarding business conditions in England was struck by Mr. H. E, Powell, of Christchureh, who returned by the Ulimaroa to-day from a trip abroad. Business in England, hn said, had' improved while ho was there, and, subject to the National Party getting info power again", there should be si revival in' trade. Tariffs, he contended, worn tlio solution, of I he unemployment problem. It was ridiculous to think that Britain had been spoonfeeding Europe for all these years to the detriment of her own unemployment question. Denmark produce was going to England, and the farming industry in Great Britain was at stagnation1 point. Britain, Mr. Powell said, was on the cvo of a trade revival, and, with confidence in the country, secondary industries were going to bo developed. All tho primary producing countries of the Empire would benefit to a considerable extent as a, result of tariffs, and tho benefit would come more quickly than whs generally anticipated. Mr. Powell condemned the dole, which ho said had created a condition of affairs which would take considerable eradication.
