BROADCASTING
MOVE IN AUSTRALIA
ON BRITISH SYSTEM
In view of the, long-discussed proposal for a change from private company control to board control of radio broadcasting in New Zealand, which question it is expected will be debated by Parliament very shortly now, an announcement made over the air by the short-wave station 3MB, of Melbourne, is of particular interest. It was that tho Federal Government is considering the preparation of a Bill for the control of broadcasting in Australia chi the lines of the British system, a % nd that the question would be debated Tit Canberra this week. Tho Australian A stations are at present either owned or leased by the Post and Telegraph Department and are operated by the Department, but tho programmes are provided under contract by the Australian Broadcasting Company, which comprises the Union Theatres ;nul Fullers and others, whose term (throe years) is on tho eve of expiry. By a curious coincidence, it seems likely, both the New Zealand and Federal Parliaments will be discussing almost identical measures for the improvement of tho service of, radio. broadcasting at the same time.
