NEW GUARD

; * ; N.S.W.'S LATEST FORCE WHY IT WAS FORMED

(From "The Post's" Representative.) SYDNEY, 18th October. What is the New Guard? Much has been heard of its activities in New South Wales of late, and it has been a sore point with Labour politicians, but that it is something very real has been proved by the overflow meetings it has held in the city and suburbs. It is still growing, and it may even develop into the strongest political and civil force Australia has known. Just at present it is uot taken too seriously by those who are unaware of its character. The whole of the work done in connection with the vast organisation has been voluntary, and the expenses have been met by voluntary contributions, and it is planned to continue on those lines. It was formed about eight mouths ago, and from 3 small beginning extended throughout the State. The New Guard is organised on. sound military lines. It is administered by a headquarters of ex-service men, comprising all the necessary branches and subdivisions of a staff organised and ready to function. Greater Sydney is divided into four zones, which are subdivided into divisions, and these divisions into "localities." Each unit is officered and staffed by men who have seen service. Members of the New Guard are classified into three groups, as follows: —A class are those who volunteer as shock troops. They are mobile forces ready to deal with any situation that may arise. B class are chiefly technicians anil their assistants to maintain essential services such as water, gas, electric light, and to control food supplies. C class are householders detailed for the defence of their residential suburbs. Tlio New Guard is purely protective, so its organisers claim, and will not function unless called upon to do so by constituted authority, or until it is apparent that the forces of disorder aro in complete control. It might well be asked: What conditions do tho New Guard expect to arise. Lot the founder and leader, Colonel Erie Campbell, explain in his own words: "To-day we see the ugly child of our sloth and stupidity in charge of the great State of New South Wales, and maltreating this Dominion of the British Empire as a drunken bottle-o treats his horso that staggers when asked to carry too great a load. There are factors at work in New South Wales which, if allowed to continue unchecked, would inevitably produce want and misery on a unprecedented scale. As a result widespread lawlessness would be the order of the day. What is there available that could dual with such widespread lawlessness? There is no standing army, no national guard. If the few police were to be overwhelmed, there is no bulwark remaining, and the country would bo at the mc-rey of those who wish to establish Marxian Communism in place of our present social structure. This state of affairstlie present Lang Government is consciously or unconsciously doing its best to bring about." The New Guard has been called a Fascist organisation. Perhaps it is. It does not attempt to deny the fact.
