EMOTION SURPRISES

HURDLES HORSEMAN UP

Emotion, a. five-year-old son of Lord Quex and the Elevation mare Submersion, who broke his maiden status only at Masterton last Saturday week, won, the Spring Trial-Stakes, at special weights,. very decisively. He was several horses back when the field settled down, but was taken round to the front just beyond the half-mile, and was never thereafter in any real danger, finally scoring com- l fortably by a length and a half from the fast-finishing Joie de Val. The southern hurdle horseman, W. Cooper, who had brought Captain's Gift home in the jumping event just previously, was up on Emotion in place of S. Gerrand, who was at Waipawa, and the victory was almost as easy as that which he had on the hurdles winner. It was probably because of the rider that the dividend obtained was so large (nearly a score), for Emotion had run quite a fair race from a wide marble in the concluding event on Saturday. There was a good battle for second money. At the distance Barbacan, Gay Court, Top Flier, and Pedestal all had chances, but then Joie de Val came up fast on the outside from behind them and beat them all for the minor dividend. Barbacan-was a neck back third, and Gay Court, weakening, was a moderate fourth. Nest to finish were Retract, also running on well, Top Flier, Pedestal, Appledore, Acteeon, In Vain, arid Shootist. In Vain, in Mrs. A. M'Donald's stable, was rather an astonishing favourite, as she had raced only once previously, but she showed she possesses pace by hopping out with great celerity from number one position and leading till Emotion headed her. The showings of both Derby candidates, Gay Court • and Granado, were disappointing.
