A FIERCE GALE
DUNEDIN SWEPT
WORST IN EXPERIENCE
GREAT DAMAGE DONE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. A gale of hurricane force of the worst in experience has been raging since early morning, doing great damage. The grandstand at Logan Park has been dcroofed, and the members' stand at Wingatui racecourse collapsed. First the north end blew out, and then the roof literally somersaulted over the back. At the Karitane Baby Hospital tho suu-porch has been blown away and the roof of the hospital itself lifted 50 feet and blown to the roadway 200 yards away. A wall of an old house in Castlo street was blown down on a shop, demolishing a bedroom and a dairy. The Vacuolin, an oil steamer, carried away her mooring lines, taking part of the wharf with her. She is now anchored safely with a tug in attendance. Tho telegraph lines to the north are down and the power lines to Port Chalmers, and the northern area is without power. All through the town plate-glass windows are smashed in and great trees blown down in tho hill area. Fortunately no casualties are reported. At 1 o'clock the wind was dying and rain was impending.
