BREAK IN WEATHER

BUT NOT FOR LONG

The weather over the Dominion as a whole yesterday was fair to fine, but tho rapid approach of an intense depression brought about a sudden change last night. This affected western districts from Taranaki southward first of all. Itain fell there, and since last night northerly winds have increased to gale force in many places in and south of Cook, Strait. The centre of tho disturbance apparently crossed Otago, but telegraphic interruption south of Okuru and Oamaru has made details speculative. At 9 a.m. to-day there was a heavy north-west gale blowing at the'former pjaee, whilst the latter was experiencing a south-westerly gale. It was fine in all the chief centres yesterday-,' but in Wellington last night the north-westerly increased, seven points of rain falling at Kelburn between 5 and 7 a.in. and 13 at Lower Hutt. No report has been received from Dunedin, the line " being interrupted by trees being brought down and dislocating communication.

Strong northerly to westerly winds will still reach gale-force in places. But in the far South sbutliorlies will blow, and the southerly change is likely to become geAeral before long. Unsettled and squally weather, with rain in most districts and cooler temperatures, is the immediate outlook, but tlio present indications are that before long there may bo a reversion to the pleasant weather of tho last few days.
