SPORTING ACTIVITIES

THE TENNIS CLUB

Details legardiug the sporting activities iv JMirumar were given by Mr. A. \V. Cooper, a member of a deputation of two from the Miramar Hard Courts lenuis Club that waited ou the Wellington Lanu Tennis Association, last evening to (inalise arrangeineuts for tlis rental of courts at Miramar. The Miratuar Hard Courts Tennis Club, said Mr. Cooper, had 8B financial members, aud there were '20 or 30 applications tor membership that had not yet been accepted. The club had had the option of three properties for its courts. They were not concerned at Miramar with tennis alone, but with all sports. This year .they would concentrate on tennis, next year on cricket, and then on cioquet and bowls. As regards Uugby, they had two ex-All Blacks looking alter training, and well-known men paying attention to athletics and boxing.. Mr. P. Henry was looking after tennis. Owing to his insistence, the club had used the Miramar tennis courts. A member asked what would become of tennis if they took up cricket next year at 'Miramar.' Mr. Cooper stated that the tennis club would carry on just as strongly as did the other clubs in the district. The Rugby club and the tennis club were each the second largest of their kind in Wellington. The boxing club was the largest in Wellington and the strongest of its kind in New Zealand. There were 9000 inhabitants in "the valley," said Mr. Cooper, so that there was scope for all sport. The hard courts club was granted the use of four courts for three years, with the right of renewal. It was agreed that any damage to the courts, nets, and gear should be made good by the club, with the exception- of fair wear and tear. The courts are only to be made use of by the Wellington Association in the case of interprovincial matches. SUNDAY PLAY. The following letter was received at the meeting of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association from the secretary of the Eawhiti Tennis .Club regarding Sunday play:—"At the<jrecent, meeting of club officials mention was made of Sunday play on school courts, and I have now been instructed by my committee to ask whether the association intends taking the matter up with the Education Board in order to have the board's bylaws amended. This is a matter which affects a large number of affiliated clubs, and as the association is the representative body of the clubs, it seems to my committee that this is a matter for the association to take up. . . .-. If they were successful in gaining this point, the Management Committee would then have something tangible to put before unaffiliated clubs, such as Kent Terrace,1 as to the benefits of affiliation, and thus would in all probability gain many new members." Members stated that they were in sympathy with the application. The,matter would be taken up with the Education Board at a suitable opportunity. INTERCLUB ENTRIES.
