JAPANESE MARINES BUSY

SHANGHAI, 17th October

Because of the continuance of interracial clashes every night the International Settlement's Municipal Council lias ordered a Russian detachment of the Volunteer Corps and a permanent corps composed of White Eussians into the Japanese quarter to reinforce the police. Japanese marines are rushing in all directions throughout the night, suppressing riots and rescuing victims. Nanking is deeply concerned over the increasing number 'of Japanese warships plying on the Yangtze. Sixteen destroyers and gunboats, from a total of 29 in Chinese waters, are stationed at different points along China's major waterway.
