There was showery weather for the Caulfield races, the attendance suffering. Thei* were a few New Zealanders present.
Stephen, trained by the former New; Zealander, Lou Robertson, had. an1 easf win in the Bur wood Handicap.
Dutehie finished brilliantly in the Mona Nursery. She cost ninety ftuineas,, as a yearling. Her owner is Sirs. Buxton, who raced High Syce, Highland, and other good horses. Coonartha Jed all the -way in the Gwyn Nursery. His breeder and owner, Mr. Ben Chaffey, won the Caulfield Cup witli Whittier, and with Manfred (twice). Denis Boy was in the rear division early in the Caulfield Cup. He moved up at the turn and finished brilliantly. This waa his first start at Melbourne, and he entered into discussions a fortnight ago. Hi* trainer, Frank M'Grath, won the race with Amounis last year. The favourite, Vigne, led into the straight, but tired over the last bit. Dark Man and Shadow King were never dangerous. Knox, rider ,of the winner, stated that he was interfered with early in the race, but had a good run over the concluding stages. He had the race won at the home turn. Webster, rider of First Acre, said he had a good run on ihe rails all the way, but his mount was not- good enough. Denis Boy is not engaged in the Melbourne Cup. He if liable to rehandicap in the Cantata Stakes. The veteran, George William, won ; the Lceeples easily. The favourite, Tresolaus, was fatally injured and W. Sandiford, who fell with Tresolaus, sustained contusions and possibly internal injuries. H« was removed to hospital. Baccha Sakao was prominent always, and won the Windsor Handicap easily. His rider, frank Dempsey, also won on Stephen. Results:—,~ BUBWOOD HANDICAP, or 300 sots; Tor thret-year-olds; eight furlongs and a. half. Won by a neck, half a length between second and third. Recuperator was fourth. Time, 51% sec. GWYN NURSERY (for colts and geldings), of 450 soys; four furlongs and a half. CAULFIELD CUP, of 5000 sots and sold cup valued 150 sots; second 700 sots; third So> sots; one mile and a half. Denis Boy, 7.0 (A. Knox) .............. 1 Prince Dayton, 7.7 (B. Lewis) 2 First Acre, 8.4 (T. Webster) 3 Boyal Barb made the early, pace from Mist Arrow, Vigne, Opera King, Illustrious, Jeypore, First Acre, and Denis Boy, with Dark Man, Prince Dayton, and Battenburg the last three. Vigne improved his position at the six furlongs, and at the half-mile led by two lengths from Boyal Barb, with Opera King, First Acre, Lineage, Miss Arrow, Prince Dayton, and Denis Boy following In that order. First Acre, on the rails, looked the winner at the distance, but Denis Boy finished best and won by a lout neck, with Hie third horse a length and a quarter away. Then came Spearman, Vigne, Dark Man, and Shadow King, with Jeypore last. Time, 2min JUVisec. ; WYUNA STEEPLES, of 300 sots; about two miles. Georga William, 9.13 1 Rotarian, 9.8 * Borneo, 10.9 1 Fourteen started. Won by■• eight lengths; four lengths between second and third. Meltoa Star was fourth. Time, 3mln 49% sec.
