CLUB OPENINGS
AT MIRAMAR GROUNDS
The newly formed Miramar Hard Courts Club, which has leased courts from the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, opened the season on Saturday. Mr. H. Townsend, the president of the club, referred to the growth of the district and the enormous number of potential plovers in Miramar, and the fact that lack of club facilities had prompted the formation of the new body.. With the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association's courts already in the district, it had been thought not proper to acquire property, but held desirable to come to some agreement which would be of mutual benefit to the association and the club. This agreement was now finalised, giving the association an assured income from some of its courts and at the same time popularising the grounds still further, while the club had an elastic arrangement whereby as membership increased the renting of further courts was possible. The social side of club life was valuable, and the body was eminently one •if sporting interests. Mrs. Townsend hit the first ball over the net, and players began contesting a points tournament. This produced five ties in the women's event, and a tie in the men's singles. In the play-off, the winners proved to be Miss Hart and A. U. Pinkerton. ■ Visitors from the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association included the chairman of the Management Committee, Mr. C. 6. Swinburne, and Messrs. H. R. Baigent and Stirling. . . Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion by the ladies' committee.
