Captain W. E. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Faulkner, who was formerly Miss M'Harrie, of Karamea. The latter, by the way, has on one or two occasions lately telephoned. to her mother in Hamilton. Captain Faulkner has been anxious to get a New Zealand. Cross, but so far has been unsuccessful. As the Victoria Cross was granted only to those serving under Eegular officers, this special award was struck for the militia, volunteers, or armed constabulary. The conditions relating to it were exactly the same as those relating to the Victoria Cross. The recipient received an annual pension of £10. Twenty-one-offi-cers and men were awarded the Cross. The late Captain C.-Maling had this decoration, and Sergeant M'Konna, who was previously stationniaster at Palmerston North, had also been awarded the New Zealand Cross. The last one which came into the auction room of Messrs. Glendining and Co., London, hadbeen awarded to a man named Eodriquez, and realised £96. It was afterwards bought by a private collector for £130.
