DRUNKEN MOTORIST
LICENCE RETAINED
Stating that he had been driving i'ov many years,, and had never been in trouble before, Harold Brooks Chew driver of the ; -Royal Oak luggage van asked the Magistrate, Mr. E. Page, not to suspend his licence, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle in Victoria s-treet. The Magistrate inflicted a> fine of £20, but made no order affecting the accused's licence.
Senior-Sergeant- Edwards said that at 0 p.m... yesterday the police received word that an accident had occurred in Victoria street. The accused had apparently been driving along Hunter street, an', in turning into Victoria street he had cut the corner and had come into collision with a,car travelling onits correct side. When the police arrived the accused was seen to be staggering, and was taken to the station and examined by a, doctor. The accused told the police that "he had been on beer all day." The Senior-Sergeant said that the accused hud been convicted on Uth July for negligent driving.
