NORFOLK MATCH

NEW ZEALAND BATTING

BAD OPENING RETRIEVED

DEMPSTER DOES WELL

(United Tress Association— By Electric Telograph—Copyright.) (Special to Press Association.) (Received 21st August, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 20th August. mho New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against Norfolk, in fine weather. The wicket was easy and a strong wind assisted the bowlers. The teams arc:— New Zealand—Alleott, Weir, Mills, Matheson, Dempster, James, Page, Merritt,1 Kerr, Cromb, and Talbot. Norfolk.—Rought-Rougiit (3), Falcon, Walker, Pedder, Smith, Scott Chad, Foster, Coldham, and Eagle. Pago won the toss and New Zealand batted first, but started badly,' four wickets being down at the luncheon adjournment for 80 runs. The batting of the team was somewhat uneven. Dempster and Talbot added 86 for the fifth wicket, the former, despite the lack of match practice, maintaining a magnificent defence. He was also quick to score o£ any loose deliveries, particularly on the leg side.' He appeared to be set for another, century when, he was bowled off his pads. His innings lasted 190 minutes and he hit seven 4's. ' • ".■■•■■-■ Talbot batted steadily until he was caught by the wicketkeep,er. Matheson played a forcing game and '-was occasionally lucky, but his' innings was highly valuable. The bowling never appeared dangerous, although the wind enabled Eagle and Kought-Rought to swing the ball. The. weather in the afternoon turned wintry. ...' .'.. -■'..' ' ; Norfolk batted for '45 minutes and had lost one wicket for 24 runs when stumps were drawn. Matheson, who wore His sweater while bowlifg, dismissed Falcon with a ball that left the pitch like lightning. . Stumps i were drawn half an hour early owing to rain. It: was against Essex that the team opened their tour auspiciously by winning by an innings and 48 runs. Judging by the performances of Norfolk teams during recent seasons the opposition met by the New Zealanders in this match should be ,as weak as any they will encounter. -Last season the county was dismissed on several occasions for very poor totals in the .secondclass county championship, and did not win a match until the middle of August. Falcon,, whose wicket Matheson has taken, commenced well by hitting up 220 runs in his first three, games, but in the next ten games reached double .figures only three times. J. M. Coldham started, none too well, but played at the top of his form towards the end of the, summer, his splendid fielding making him of further value to the side. The three Rought-Roughts in the team iuelude 8.W., who hit up -136 against Hertfordshire and finished with the highest aggregate,. 306, for the county; R.C., who took' 19 wickets at' an average of 12.15; and. D., who did not play last year. Coldham made 303 runs, with' an average of 25.25, and Falcon compiled 289 with an average of 24.08. The most successful bowlers were Eagle, R. C. Rought-Rought, and a professional, J. E. Nichols, who is not included in the present team': The team is probably wholly comprised 'of amateurs. Four of" the players—Walker, Pedder, Smith; and Foster—aid not play for the county last year. In the secondclass county championship last year, Norfolk finished nineteenth, the summary of their matches being as follows:—Played 10, won12, lost 4, lost on the first innings 2, drawn 2. 1
