TRADS AGREEMENT

MANUFACTURERS' INQUIRIES

A proposal that inquiries be made from the Government as to the position of the trade agreement with Australia with a view to urging its cancellation or-revision was made at the Manufacturers? Federation conference yesterday.

It was urged that in the interests of New Zealand and United Kingdom manufacturers the incidence of preference to Australian manufacturers as compared with United Kingdom, manu-facturers-should.be adjusted to the same comparative basis as existed prior -to the tariff revision operative from 23rd July, 1930.

> ;Tho conference set up a committee to 'deal With the matter. ■ ■■■■■■:

■iOn the motionro'f-Mr. J. Gr. Jeffery (Bunedin) it was resolved that it would be, in* the- best 'interests of the Dominion Twere-fthe.-Customs Department -to impose onigo.ods received from, the Australian Commonwealth, with the exception of those goods which are not produced in New; Zealand, a dumping duty equal to the, amount of the exchange premium obtained.

i In connection with dumping, the following remit was before the conferehce:—"That the Government be requested to' so amend the. Customs Act that it.-be obligatory on the part of every exporter of apparel: to indicate in each invoice the ordinary or original selling price of the goods therein charged. Further, that the Government be requested that duty belevied on the purchase price plus a dumping duty of twothirds'of the; difference between the price actually charged, and the ordinary or original\price indicated." , .

Mr. J. T.'liewis expressed the opinion that 75:per.vcent.--of women's garments which came into New Zealand ■was dumped. He suggested that a price be placed on each garment and then the. duty, ad valorem. The .manufacturers had all the protection, they needed if they were protected against dumping.

The cgnf«rence decided to refer the remit-back.to the. Wellington Association to b/e recasted. It was suggested that it might then be forwarded to the proposed Development of. Industries Board.- ; '
