ield cannot be gauged until a couple *>f< ,v«eks before the :iace, present indica;ions are that this year's field -will be' veil \ip to the average in numbers and in luality, says an Australian -writer. On practically every Sydney and suburban track there are three-year-olds with Derby aspirations, and the Hobartvillc' Stakes ami the Rosehill Guineas are likely to have big' fields in the trying-out process. Thus at Rosehill there are Bonnie V"alerie and Intuition; at AVarwick Farm, Segovia; at Moorefield, Movie Star; at Canterbury Park, Burwood; at Victoria Park, Pacifier; at Randwjck, Golden Grate, Banier, Plying Dave, Old Ming, Koomeela-, Ranchero, Chatham, Senator, md other lesser lights who may become prominent in the .course of the next £ew iveeks. Representatives of the Dominion will probably include the now Australiauovrned Ammon Ra (Sires Produce Stakes), Movie Star (Breeders' Plate), Cypress, and O.ratorian, a maiden performer. Victoria is said to have some very promising Derby material, and three names mentioned are Idle Banter, High Brae, and Illustrious. The last-named is likely to be J. Scobie:s best candidate. Newcastle has a Derby hope of class known, lo Sydney racegoers as Johnnie Jhsou. He scored at Randwick in the autumn, and is considered to liave improved a groat deal since theD. . . • ——— I
