"LISTENING IN" ON FERRY

Kylo (Reform, Riccarton) in the Houso of Representatives' last night, referring to the reported remarks of tho United member for Kaiapoi (Mr. R. W. Hawke) in tho course of a political speech in Christchurch on Saturday night. ' . J a -newspaper" report, Mr. Kyle sind Mr. Hawke hud declared that after tho General Election tho United 1 arty would have an absolute majority. Ho had also said that Reform would win only thrco seats: in the South Island. Mr. Kyle reminded Mr. Hawke that a great endeavour had- been made m Christehurch amongst United supporters to, bring about a "fusion" so far as the Kaiapoi and Christchureh North electorates were concerned. He had hoard Mr. Hawke tell someone on the Lyttelton ferry steamer that Mr. Hawke't electorate was going to be fixed up for him. Quoting further, Mr. Kyle said Mr. Hawke had remarked that the Prime; Minister had got right down into the; hearts of: the people. ,It seems to me," he added, "that the Prime Minister, has gone below the people's hearts; he has penetrated the diaphragm and got into the stomach." When Mr. Kyle had finished, Mt, Hawke claimed that he had been misrepresented, and that Mr.' Kyle had boon eavesdropping on the ferry steamer. Mr. Speaker objected to this expression, and Mr. Hawko was obliged to" withdraw. *. ,: . '■ .;,.-. . '; .. ' Mr. Hawke said that what Mr. Kyle had heard when: he was listening in to what was said about the Christchurch North and Kaiapoi scats he had stated incorrectly; .;; .
