BALOKOVIC CONCERT

SUPERB PLAYING The second Balokovic concert, given in the Town Hall last night, was &a big a succcsb as the first, and there is no'doubt about Wellington's appreciation of Balokovic's superb mastery of the violin, both from the point of view of technique and temperamentally. His. playing last night entranced his hearers, and the audience was appreciative and enthusiastic almost to extremes. A varied .programme satisfied all tastes, and,. although the encores were numerous and generously given, the audience : would have liked more. The opening number was Mozart's "Concerto in D Major/ the three intricate movements of which served' to demonstrate Balokovic's -great technique and the wonderful tone which he can produce from his famous "Strad." One of the most appreciated items of the evening was Grieg's "Sonata in. D Minor," wherein piano and violin equally share the honours and the work, for it is a composition which is rugged, strenuous, and dramatic. It was a magnificent performance in which buth the violinist' and' the pianist, Kjell Fleetwood, .-reached the topmost heights. Following these - two masterpieces came a bracket of four lighter -numbers, but played in an equally masterful fashion. These four were Chopin's '"Nocturne in D Major," . De' Falla's■'■' "Danse ■ Espagnol" (arranged for the violin by Kreisler), Debussy's "La Fille auv Cheveux de Lin," and. Bazzini's, l"La Ronde--'' dcs .Lutins." Chopin's "Nocturne" was perhaps as much appreciated as any of the numbers, a wonderful depth of emotional- feeling being put into it by the player. The encores were in keeping with the set programme, and included "Adagio for G String" (Fiirillo), Kreisler's ever-popular "Caprice Viennoise," a •■' delightful ;"Tango" by Albeniz, and the well-known- -Brahms's waltz;- . V, .-\v"' The -final recital will' be given in ; the grand Opera House to-morrow evening.'
