So little separates the position*) of the leading teams in the senior A grade that each Saturday is full of interest, both to players aud their suppoiters.
University v. Wesley.—Both teams maintained their positions as second and third teams on Saturday, although Wesley gained tUo victory from Technical Old Girls by the narrow margin of one point. In the first half• of the game Wesley gained a lead of four points, Technicals combined attacks falling short of scoring. The score-' at half-time was: Wesley 10, Technical 6. On resumption Technical dominated the play, sure passing from the defence taking the ball to the forwards,' who scored quickly in succession until the score was 11-10 in Technicals favour. Ey strenuous efforts Wesley regained; something of their form displayed in the first half, and the score see-sawed until time was called, when Wesley held the advantage by one point.' The final score was 16-13. Mr. Hamilton refereed. University ,v. Kia Ora: —Once again University demonstrated their ability to provide fast, clean basketball, their passing movements being pretty to 'watch.: The- advantage of height of the University defence. prevented . Kia ' Ora forwards from gaining the second chances at scoring, but nevertheless their quick passing kept the defence busy. Kia Ora missed the services of C. M'Gurk, who was unable to play owing to an injury received in a match , two weeks ago. University emerged victors by 20 points to 12. Miss M. E. Armstrong controlled the game. 'Awatea.v. Gilbys.—Awatea did not field their usual nine on Saturday, two third-grade members substituting for two senior girle who were late in arriving. 'From the first whistle Gilbys attacked persistently, and had much the better of the- game, gaining 10 goals to Awatea's 3. In the second spell Awatea altered -the positions of their players, the change proving of great benefit, enabling' them, to get possession more and keep ' their forI wards supplied. They scored & goals to 1 their opponents' 3, the game ending: Gilbys 13, Awatea 7. Mr. Hamilton was in charge of the game. Brymay v. Training College.—Again more experience and more decided team tactics proved too strong for Brymay, last year's eenior B champions. With the experience gained this year, this team should show great improvement next season, and is likely to be ono of the strongest teams in the grade. Training College played their usual open game, and'had no difficulty in defeating Brymay by 18 goals to 7. Mr. Hamilton refereed. REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS.
, Progress has been made with the coaching of\the various representative teams, and the senior B and third grade teams have settled down to_confident team-work. With the two fourth grade representative teams the fact that barely two weeks has been allowed for coaching, means that unless each player settles down seriously to hard work, the teams will have more than they can manage ahead of'them. Owing to the exceptionally large number of teams in this grade (35) it proved a longer task than was anticipated"for the selection, and' now. it remains to those chosen and the'selector- to do what is possible in the' short time available.
As one condition attached to being a member of. a representative team is that each 'player must tie in' good training, the following "Do's and Dont's" will be of .interesti-r-
■ 'Do.r—(l)-Try to/attend, a gymnastic class at least once a week—not apparatus work so much as general activity;
(2) run twice round the block every day at a steady rate. Try about four sprints of 50 yards. (3) Every morning regularly do a few trunk downward bending exercises and about five minutes with a skipping rope. (4) When cold, instead of huddling over a lire, take a skipping rope, and ten minutes' exercise will keep one warm, for a number of hoars. ' '
Don't.—(l) Have more than one late night fc week. (2) Retire at night later than 10' o'clock if possible. (3) Eat between meals. Have-three good: meals a day. Cat, out sweets, cttkes, pastry, and sweet biscuits; cat down the amount of tea and coffee consumed; drink as much water <as 'pos'siblej especially between .weals; have plenty of> fresh fruit and vegetables;'do'not.eat too much meat; but do not diet strenuously— enjoy your meals. (4) Overdo strenuous exercises; Permanent or accumulated fatigue is,a dangerous state. OENERAXi., A meeting of club secretaries called last week was fairly well attended. The
maiii business before the meeting was in connection with the forthcoming dance to entertain tho visiting Canterbury and Mnrlborough teams. Club secretaries were asked to notify theii^ members and to give the daiicc their.utmost support.
