THE BUDGET

REFORM ATTITUDE

"NOT WITHOUT INTEREST"

Another caucus of tho Reform Party I was held to-day to discuss tho attitude the party will adopt towards (lie proposals contained in tho Budget, but when seen this afternoon the Leader of tho Opposition (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) said that he had no statement to make. In reply to a question, he said that ho was not certain yet whether he or the Hon. W. Downie Stewart would initiate the Budget debate but he admitted with a smile that whoever spoke the occasion would not be devoid Of interest. Labour members are awaiting' with interest the attitude the Reform Party decides to adopt, although the expectation is that Reform will undertako no action that will in any way imperil the position of tho Government on the Treasury benches. It was suggested this morning that the main problem before the Reform Party was to devise a suitable excuse for not forcing a dissolution or, failing that, to so arrange the division of forces at the crucial moment in the House aa to avoid tho Government's defeat by a narrow margin.
