NEWS OF THE DAY

Seventeen Years Ago. Although hostilities in the Great War began' before 4th August, 1914, seventeen years ago, to-day is the anniversary of the fateful day upon which Britain declared war against the Central European, Powers. Her ultimatum to Germany expired on the night of 4th August. For Next Council Meeting. The. question, of the constitution of an appeal board which it has been suggested should be set up to discuss and adjust differences in municipal employment was to have, been debated at last evening's meeting of the City Council, but in order that further consideration might be given to certain aspects, it was decided to defer the discussion till Thursday evening. At this meeting also a statement will probably be made regarding'the very long delays in1 connection with the eastern and.western access works. Public Bodies' Trading. To a deputation of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, which waited on the Government recently, the Prime Minister stated that the Government had under consideration the question of taxing public bodies trading, unfairly, it was asserted, in competition with private enterprise. The secretary of the Associated Chambers says that it has come as a painful surprise to the organisation to note that no reference to the matter has been made in the Budget. The Associated Chambers estimated that approximately £100,000 in revenue could be obtained from this source. The Whakarire at Work; While the Terry Wharf is being lengthened to meet the requirements of the Union Company's new ferry steamer Rangatira, the opportunity is being taken by the Harbour Board to carry out dredging operations in the vicinity, apd the board's bucket dredge Whakarire will be. engaged in the work during the next few days. The dredging i 3 not being done "to. dig a hole to accommodate the Bangatira" as there is easily sufficient depth of water around the wharf at present to meet the now ship's requirements, but ds a regular harbour work. If the spoil brought up by the dredge were sifted, doubtless some interesting recoveries of lost property would bo made. Out in the Snow. The 20 or 30 members of the Tararua Tramping Club who went out to the Field Hut on the Otaki side of the Tararua Eange on Saturday found when they proceeded to tho Kime Hut whare on Sunday, that the conditions were against good, ski-ing. For some hours a heavy snowstorm enveloped them, but this did not doter the more hardy of the trampers from enjoying themselves in tho open. The party arrived back in Wellington on Sunday evening. The Anglican Bishops. It is recorded in the "Nelson Diocesan Gaaotto" that on 21at July tho Bishop of Nelson entered on the twentieth year of his episcopate. The Archbishop of New Zealand entered the twenty-second year of his -episcopate on 16th January.1 He was Bishop of Waiapu from his consecration until 30th September, 1913, when he was translated to Auckland. The Bishop of Christchurch was consecrated as Bishop of Barrow-in-Furness on 21st September, 1909,, and translated to Christchurch on 24th August, 1926, so that he is nearing the end of his twentythird ycaT. Tho Bishop of Wellington is in his twenty-first year, the Bishop, of Dunedin is in his twelfth year, and the Bishop of Waikato is in his fifth year, and the Bishop of Waiapn in his .second, year, v bishop.

A Modest Request. "The price of those things seem to have come down," remarked Mr. W. H. Nagle at a meeting of tho Mount Eden Borough Council,; when a young woman resident of the borough asked the council to pay the cost of a pair of stockings valued at 3s "fid) which has been damaged as the result of her tripping over a valve box in Dominion road. Mr. R. J. Mills said the Works Committee considered the claim very modest, and recommended that the amount be paid, without prejudice Had tho young woman asked for a guinea, sho would have got nothing. The recommendation was adopted. The Mayor, Mr. T. M'Kab, said that ho had inspected the vnlvo box, which was only about threeeighths of an inch above tho level of the footpath. Rents of Town HalL Sevoral more applications for reductions of tho charges for the use of tho Town Hall wore considered by the City Council last evening. The hall was granted freo for community singing during a lunch hour each week, tho Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, remarking that the collections were bringing in quite a fair amount for the relief "und. Tho Wellington Competitions Society asked that the rent should: be reduced from tho standard charge, which would bo £272 17s Bd, to the charge mado last year, £200. It was explained that tho full charge last year would have been £231, but the council had agreed to a roduction to £200; this year the hall is being taken for three extra days/ On the motion of tho Mayor it was docided to reduce tho amount in the same proportion as last year, which would bring the charge to £225. Referring to' other applications, the Mayor exprossed the opinion that the council should not reduce, the rates except when tho hall was required for charitablo purposes. Applications for reduction could bo made afterwards if the bodies concerned got into financial difficulties.
