M'Kenzie (Martinborough). The funeral of the late Private Joseph Gunning, 3(3177,' N.Z.E.F., took place at the Soldiers' Cemetery, • afc Karori, yesterday afternoon, and•■;■ was largely attended. Mr. Frederick North, J.P., a highly esteemed resident of Wellington^ He was bom in Duneain, educated at and one of the first pupils of Otago High School, and at the Otago University. He subsequently passed his examination as a barrister and solicitor and entered into practice, and was for some time in partnership witli Mr. MacGregor (now Mr. Justice MacGregor). He left to.go Home to England, where he remamed for many years, and returned to New, Zealand some four and twenty yeaTS ago ; when he entered the Civil Service until he retired on the ground of' illhealth some fourteen or .fifteen-years ago. Since then he has lived a retired Jife at Seatoun, taking considerable interest in bowling, and was at one timo; president of the Seatouu Bowling CluU and was recently elected a life meinbeß of that body. .He leaves a widow 'an^ son and daughter to mourn' their-loss. ■'• Mr. Joseph W. Bridge; a -well-knowi* dentist of Wellington for- many yeara past, died suddenlyin his surgery, Willis street, yesterday afternoon, aged 74 years. Deceased, who was born iv. England, came out to New. Zealand fifty-two years ago as a dispenser to the Invercargill Hospital. He then entered into business as a chemist at Riverton, and as it hobby he became an cnvner and breeder of racehorses. ; He spent two years in a visit to England and then, returning to New Zealand forty years ago, set up business as a dentisfc in Willis street, Wellington. He carried on his practice for a number o4 years, and then went farming, ultimately returning to his practice as a dentist iv Willis street. He had two daughters and four sons.
