MR. T. N. BRODRICK1,
' The death, o.ccurrcd on' Sunday, at Martinborough", of Mr. Thomas Noei Brodriek, formerly Commissioiior of Crown Lands, Wellington, and subsequently Under-Sccretary of the Lands Department." ■.:■ ■ •■ ' ■'■' ■*■''' The late Mr. Brodrick joined the [Lands Department in May, 1877, and i first took uj, duty as an assistant-sur-veyor on Banks. Peninsula." _ After .performing many services of a diverse character iv the Canterbury district, he was appointed district surveyor an April,! 1888, and stationed at' Timaru. When in 'Canterbury' lie carried- ouf many mountain surveys, including the: discov-' cry' and mapping of a new route to .the ■West Coast, from Lake. Ohau to Paringa; the' mapping' of the Tasnian, Mueller; Hooker, Murchison, Classen, Godley, and Eichardson Glaciers; and the surrounding country.' This work involved the' measurement of the rates of travel of the glaciers, the formation of' reads and tracks, and the building of the Ball and Matte Brun huts, on the Tasman Glacier. In 1904 ho .was deputed to classify, value, and subdivide the Flaxbourne estate, of 57,000 acres, m Marlborough. In July, 1906, he was appointed land officer and inspector of surveys in the Gisbome office, and while there he was a'member of the Tawawhiti District Maori .Land-Board.-, -in May, 1909, he was promoted to be Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor for Hawkes Bay, and in August 1910, 'he was transferred to a similar position in the Canterbury Laud District. Two years later lie was transferred to the Wellington district, and m August, 1915, he was" appointed Secretary of the Department. While filling this latter position ho had a very strenuous' term of office owing to. the- inauguration of the discharged.'soldier settlement policy; and in recognition of thowork ho did in that connection he was awarded the Order of^tlio British Empire, and in 1920 was made amember of the Imperial Service Order. The late Mr. Brodriek is survived by two sons, Mr. Novman' Aylmer: Brodrick, managev of the Livercargill bavings Bank, and Mr. Paul .Poster Brodrick a ruiiliolder at Mavtinborougli, and a daughter, Mrs.: Humphrey Holdorness, wife of the manager .for; the New Zea-land-Shipping Company at Christchurch. The funeral will take place at: Christ--church to-morrow. :-.-
