EDUCATION VOTE

EFFORT TO MAINTAIN IT

A motion was passed unanimously at last evening's meeting of the Wellington School Committees and Educational Federation, to. .the effect, that, in order to prevent a reduction iii the expenditure upon education, a deputation from the association should wait upon all the members of. the House of Eepresentatives, and, failing this, a circular letter should be sont to all members stating that the association opposes any decrease in the education grant to primary schools. - The matter was brought up by-Mr.-G. L. M'Donald, who said that he did not agree with the chairman (Mr. ,C. 11. Pinnock) that the matter of education, estimates was one /entirely :of money. It had been said that in New Zealand about £13,000,000 was'spent yearly in various forms of' pleasure, and between £3,000,000 and-£4,000,----000 on education. It was, ■ therefore, not a matter of-spending, money,l but how to spend it. The Minister of Education had said.that sometimes expenditure was the surest way of economy. Education ■ yielded a greater return than any other form of expenditure. He suggested that the / association should seek . the speaker's permission to address Parliament.

After Mr. L. Hennessey had expressed doubt as to the possibility of a deputation, Mr. M'Donald said that he had conferred with'several members of the House, and there was every possibility of the deputation being received.
