WORLD'S RECORDS

NEW ZEALAND TROTTERS

The results of importations from abroad and of careful breeding _ were again shown in the notable improvements in speed, in old and young horsos alike, said Mr. H. F. Nicoll "(Ashburton) in' his presidential address at the New Zealand Trotting Conference, which was held in Wellington to-day. At the. New Zealand Metropolitan Club's Pobruary Meeting some phenomenal times wero recorded. In the Champion Three-year-old Handicap, Eed Shadow set a new Australian and New Zealand three-year-old one and ahalf miles pacing record of -3min 1G 4-osec, which was. within four-fifths of a second of Great Bingen's New Zealand race record. In the Midsummer Handicap Harold Logan ran 4min 13 2-ssec for two miles, cutting 5 2-ssee off the world's pacing record for two miles, previously held by Peter fiingen. In the same race Lindbergh ran second in 4min ISsec, also lowering the world's race record. It was a great performance for two' horses in one race .to break a world's'record. Mr. Nicoll said, he could not recall such another instance, and New Zealand now held the: world's pacing record over two miles. Harold Logan's record was the more j meritorious in that it was made in a raco on a six-furlong track in a J)ig field. At tho Easter Meeting at Adding-' ton three new records were established. Admiral Bingen reduced the Australian and Now Zealand one and a-half miles unhoppled trotters' race record to 3min 18 3-ssec, and the same afternoon Red Shadow established a world's record for three-year-old pacersi of 4min 27sec, this being, bettered an hour later by Arethusa, who went 4min 24sec to make a world's, record for a three-year-old pacer over two miles. "We look forward to the day when a two-minute record will be established in New Zealand,", added Mr. Nicoll, "and it appears as if it is only a matter of suitable conditions obtaining for this to be achieved."
